Find THE Toy Castle
There are so many toy castles out there, how do you know when you have THE toy castle? You know, the one your child will love on sight and play with for many, many hours.
Well, that’s not an easy question to answer. There are so many toy castles on the market, both new and vintage models, that choosing can be difficult. The things you need to take into consideration are the following:
How old is your child? Make sure the toy castle you choose for your child is age-appropriate. Purchasing a LEGO castle set for a three year old is not a good idea – too complicated for a three year old, and the pieces are small enough to be a choking hazard for young children. If you have a young child, consider a Fisher Price, Mattel or Veggie Tale castle.
Would your child prefer a pretty dragon or a fierce dragon? If your child enjoys bling and glamor, consider a Disney themed castle. If your child wants fierce knights and trolls, consider a King Arthur themed castle.
Does your child imagine knights, samurai or space avengers? Pick a castle that fits the imagination of your child. No sense getting your child a knight when he wants to fly, or a space ranger when he would prefer a stealthy samurai.
Where will my child play with her toy castle? If you don’t have much space, consider purchasing a castle that folds up and contains all of the play pieces within itself. Have more room? Consider a castle your child can move around in. These come in various types, from tent-style to cardboard to heavy duty plastic, to bounce houses to bunk beds that look like a castle! There are even some great websites to show you how to make your own cardboard castle.
Will there be little children around who have access to the pieces? Storage and safety should be a consideration if your child has younger siblings. Toy castles tend to have a lot of pieces, and some of them can be quite small.
Do you want the toy castle to be pre-assembled, or do you want your child to build his own? Some toy castles are complete and ready to go out of the box. Others are more project-like and half the fun is building the castle.
You should also consider sets for older children that are expandable. Older children can become bored with a set that he cannot reconfigure, expand or accessorize. Some children begin collections that take them into their adult years, with a love for realistic pieces and superior craftsmanship.
Castles have been a staple of childhood for hundreds of years. Nothing sparks a child’s imagination quite like princesses and princes, wizards and knights. Even our vision of the future contains modern castles and warriors to protect them and ladies to grace them. The appearance may change, but the fantasy endures. Even grown-ups love them. Castles inspire thoughts of chivalry, battle, glory and beauty, not to mention sorcery and fantastical creatures.
